INTERN/APPRENTICE JOB DESCRIPTIONS

The following is a department-by-department listing of all possible internships opportunities offered by the UT Film Institute and Burnt Orange Productions.  Each description also outlines the expected credentials of students seeking those positions.

Not all of the listed departments will have positions on every film.
Students should view the CALL FOR INTERNS for semester-specific listings.

Apprenticeships positions are for graduate and very advanced undergraduate students only.  They are time-consuming internships of great responsibility that require students with exceptional maturity.

Internships are open to all students eligible to receive internship credit.  They vary in levels of responsibility and time commitment, and are a good way for students to experience work in departments that interest them.  These positions are for-credit only.

ACCOUNTING

Accounting interns will gain a unique insight into the production process and will learn a lot about producing.  Applicants should be very comfortable with numbers and have strong filing skills.  Finance/Accounting classes are not necessary to be successful in an accounting internship, but classes in these disciplines as well as in economics may aid the student in better understanding the tasks at hand and lead to a more substantial role within the department.
Full time assistants may be able to perform departmental duties while shouldering a light course load.

Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a normal course load.

ART DEPARTMENT

Roles in the art department are very hands on.  A lot of time is spent building or altering set elements to meet the needs of the scene.  Students will interact with Art Directors, Property Masters, Construction Crews, Painters, Set Decorators, and Draftsman.  Our art department interns spend less time on set than they might anticipate.  Typically, building, creating, and striking of elements happens around shooting times, not during.  Art department interns might have a background in architecture, studio art, film production design, theatrical design and/or construction, or may just be handy with a good eye and a cheap solution.
Full time assistants may be able to perform departmental duties while shouldering a moderate course load.

Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a normal course load.

ASSISTANTS

Assistants to the director and producers should have experience in film production.  They should be excellent writers and have impeccable phone skills.  Throughout pre-production and production these assistants should expect to be very busy and on-call to perform any number of tasks including personal errands.  Above all else, director/producer assistants must be exceptionally discreet.

Talent assistants (if any are hired through this program) should have a strong knowledge of Austin and its surrounding areas and should be prepared to run personal errands.  Often they will need to be on call at odd hours and should expect long periods of down time. Above all else, talent assistants must be exceptionally discreet.
Full time assistants will be called for all shooting days and should not expect to accomplish other class work or time consuming tasks during production.

BURNT ORANGE PRODUCTIONS OFFICE

These positions provide unique opportunities for UT students interested in learning the nuts and bolts of life in a film production company. From basic office work to reading scripts and writing press releases, interns receive broad experiences in the many aspects of film development, PR and production. Internships consist of office hours split between clerical and PR work with additional script reading and evaluating work required outside of the office. Applicants should have strong communication, writing and analytical skills and will be expected to critique scripts on a weekly basis.  Interns should be efficient and detail-oriented with an interest in film production, development, or PR.
Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a normal course load.

CAMERA

Camera assistants and interns must have previous film and/or HD experience.  Understanding of set protocols, cinematography concepts, and camera equipment are vital to these positions.  Classes in film production, photography, and cinematography are recommended.
Full time assistants will be called for all shooting days and should not expect to accomplish other class work or time consuming tasks during production.

Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a light course load.

Typically these roles are physically intensive.

CASTING

Casting interns will work with local casting agents to prep auditions, staff auditions, and administrate the casting office.  People skills, phone skills, and filing skills are all vital to this internship.  Casting assistants may have a background in acting and/or directing and should be discreet.
Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a normal course load.

COSTUME DESIGN

Costume design apprentices should have a background in clothing design and some experience dressing and/or designing for projects with a narrative through-line.  Students work directly with the costume designer to aid the director in executing his/her vision for the look of the film.  Apprentices may assist in designing, building, buying, maintaining, and/or cataloging costumes.  As clothing will be purchased and built, apprentices are expected to have costume construction and alteration skills and an understanding of clothing vendors in the Austin area.  Classes in film production, costume design and construction are recommended.  Successful students will be creative, detail oriented, familiar with laundering of various types of clothing, and work well with others.
Full time assistants will be called for all shooting days and should not expect to accomplish other class work or time consuming tasks during production.

Costume and wardrobe interns may have a background in clothing design or experience dressing for projects with a narrative through-line.  Interns may assist in building, buying, maintaining, and/or cataloging costumes.  As clothing will be purchased and built, interns should have costume construction skills or an understanding of clothing vendors in the Austin area.  Classes in film production, costume design and construction are recommended.  Successful students will be creative, detail oriented, familiar with laundering of various types of clothing, and work well with others.

DVD CONTENT

DVD content directors and editors must have extensive experience in all areas of production including creating and executing content, organizing crews, shooting interviews and real time footage, organizing hours of footage, and editing packages for multiple outlets.  Knowledge of the DVD market, types of DVD content, and DVD technology is a must.  Directors should expect to travel.
Full time assistants may be able to perform departmental duties while shouldering a moderate course load.

DVD shooting interns should have experience shooting DV footage and may have taken classes in narrative or documentary production.  General knowledge of audio and video equipment use is expected.
Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a normal course load.

Transportation may be an integral part of these roles.
DVD editing interns should have experience in digital editing (Final Cut Pro and/or Avid).  Interns will log, capture, and edit hours of footage.  Attention to detail and an eye for content are useful skills for DVD editing interns.  Beginning and intermediate editing classes are recommended.  Marketing skills are a plus.

EDITORIAL

Assistant editors must have extensive editing experience and should have worked as an assistant editor prior to taking the position.  Understanding of editing hardware and software (Avid and Final Cut Pro), knowledge of contemporary editing technology including film-to-video transfers and/or HD and DV timecode, and strong problem solving skills are required.  Assistant editors are expected to manage editorial interns, complete editorial paperwork, oversee logging, capturing, and organizing of the footage, and maintain post-production protocols.  Those in this role must be detail oriented and extremely responsible.  Only very advanced students with a combination of editing course work and post-production experience will be considered for this position.
Full time assistants will be called for a lengthy number of days and should not expect to accomplish other class work or time consuming tasks during production and much of post-production.
Apprentice editors and editorial interns are expected to assist in the completion of editorial paperwork, aid the logging, capturing, and organizing of the footage, and help maintain post-production protocols.  Knowledge of editing hardware and software (Avid and Final Cut Pro) is required.

GRIP/ELECTRIC

Grip and Electric interns must have some experience with film lighting and grip concepts.  Film production and cinematography classes and on-set experience are recommended.  Qualified candidates may have served as gaffer, grip, or electric on past projects.  Interns are expected to have a working knowledge of grip and electric equipment, common setups, equipment usage, and safety protocols.  Part time interns must be available at the start of production and throughout shooting with regular schedules to minimize safety hazards.

HAIR/MAKE-UP

Hair and make-up interns may have experience in film and/or theatrical hair/make-up or cosmotology.  Courses in theatrical design are recommended.  Interns are expected to assist with the styling and maintaining of hair/make-up and may be used for special make-up effects and/or on days when large numbers of cast are called.  Discretion is a required quality of successful hair/make-up interns.

LEGAL

Legal interns will have a limited number of duties likely working with out-of-town council.  Applicants not enrolled in the UT School of Law must demonstrate a comparable amount of knowledge and experience.

LOCATIONS

Locations interns are expected to have a working knowledge of film production protocols (specifically on-set operations).  Interns will assist with the securing of locations, managing of locations paper work, and prepping and maintaining sets.  Successful interns are detail oriented, flexible, very well organized, and good with people.
Full time assistants will be called for all shooting days and should not expect to accomplish other class work or time consuming tasks during production.

Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a moderate course load.

POST PRODUCTION SOUND

Sound design apprentices must have sound design experience, knowledge of field and studio recording skills, proficiency in sound editing software, and an understanding of the concepts of film sound design.  Designers may be expected to assist with all aspects of sound design including ADR, foley, sound editing, and pre-mixing.  Apprentices must be flexible and willing to aid the director’s and designer’s vision for the soundscape.
Full time assistants may be able to perform departmental duties while shouldering a light course load.
Post production sound interns should have sound or music editing experience, knowledge of field and studio recording skills, and proficiency in sound editing software.  Interns may be expected to assist with all aspects of post production sound including ADR, foley, and sound editing of the film.  Successful interns are detail oriented and can focus on repetitive tasks.
Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a normal course load.

PRODUCTION

Office production interns are expected to be familiar with office equipment including copiers and fax machines and possess good phone skills.  Interns will assist the production office in day-to-day activities including filing, copying, distributing information, and running errands.  Interns should be efficient, thorough, and discreet.
Full time assistants may be able to perform departmental duties while shouldering a light course load.

Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a normal course load.

Transportation may be an integral part of these roles
Office production apprentices are expected to be familiar with the production process and production office workings.  They should have a working knowledge of production paperwork and office equipment including copiers and fax.  Apprentices will serve as Production Secretaries or Key Office PAs and assist the production office in day-to-day activities including filing, copying, distributing information, and running errands.  Apprentices should be efficient, thorough, and discreet.
Full time assistants will be called for all pre-production and production days and should not expect to accomplish other class work or time consuming tasks during production.

Transportation may be an integral part of these roles
Production apprentices may serve as 2nd 2nd Assistant Directors or as Key Set Production Assistants.  They will be involved in executing day-to-day set operations including managing production assistants, locking down locations, keeping vital production report information, wrangling extras, and assisting the 1st Assistant Director.  Apprentices will have jobs of great responsibility and are expected to be good with people, able to anticipate problems, be detail oriented, and discreet.  Students must be familiar with on-set production and should expect to work long hours.
Full time assistants will be called for all shooting days and should not expect to accomplish other class work or time consuming tasks during production.

Typically these roles are physically intensive.
Production interns may serve as set production assistants.  They will be involved in executing day-to-day set operations including locking down locations, keeping vital production report information, wrangling extras, and assisting the 1st Assistant Director.  Interns should be good with people and discreet.  Interns may be familiar with on-set production and should expect to work long hours.
Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a normal course load.

Typically these roles are physically intensive.

PROPS

Properties Interns may have a background in studio art, film production design, theatrical design and/or construction.  Interns will assist the properties master in buying and organizing the film’s props.  They should expect to have their time split between running props errands and being on set during filming.  A background with theatrical props running is very helpful.
Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a normal course load.

STILL PHOTOGRAPHY

Still photography apprentices and interns must have previous photography experience.  Understanding of set protocols, production stills concepts, marketing basics, and photography equipment are vital to these positions.  Classes in film production, photography, and cinematography are recommended.
Full time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a light course load.

Part time interns will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a moderate course load.

Students must come with their own equipment.

SOUND – PRODUCTION SOUND MIXING

Production sound apprentices/utilities will assist the production sound mixer and boom operator.  Students should have an understanding of sound recording principles, on-set protocols, and sound recording equipment.  Students may have taken sound design and/or recording classes (production or studio) and should have some experience in field recording.  Successful students are enthusiastic, detail oriented, and willing to work long hours.
Full time assistants will be called for all shooting days and should not expect to accomplish other class work or time consuming tasks during production.

Part time assistants will be able to perform the tasks of the internship while maintaining a moderate course load.
