FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
|
1. Who is eligible to apply
for Burnt Orange Productions
Internships?
All students (grads and undergrads) who qualify
for internships within their own departments/colleges are
eligible to apply.
2.
How do I apply for a Burnt Orange Productions/UTFI
Internship?
Apply for an internship by completing the submitting
the application materials detailed on How
to Apply.
Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis as applications are received. Students
will be informed when their materials have been received and how to set
up an interview time. Students are encouraged to APPLY EARLY.
3.
Must I register for credit to work on the films?
Yes. All students who intern in the program
must receive credit for their work with Burnt Orange.
4.
Should I register for the RTF internship class?
No. UTFI offers its own production practicum
for student interns and apprentices. The practicum is designed
to contextualize the students' film work as well as provide
a meeting place for students to discuss issues and get
to know their fellow interns.
This class is titled RTF 368: ADVANCED PRODUCTION
PRACTICUM and students are enrolled by consent only.
5.
What if I need to register for internship credit outside
of the RTF department?
Students who register for credit in their own
departments are responsible for completing the required
materials for their internship class and to alert the academic
advisor and/or internship coordinator to the nature of
the internship they have received. UTFI internships
often require flexibility of start, finishing, and due
dates which the RTF credit class accommodates.
6.
What is the difference between part-time internships, full-time
internships, and apprenticeships?
Part-time internships are intended to serve as
introductions to department-specific work on feature films. Students
will work 15-20 hours per week on the production or 10-15
hours per week in the Burnt Orange Productions office. Students
should work a regular schedule but will not hold positions
that require them to be on-set or in the office during
the entirety of shooting. Depending on the production
schedule and the students position, students may need
to allow for more than 20 hours per week.
These students can expect to take a regular course
load during the semester. These positions are not fellowship
eligible.
Full-time internships are intended primarily for graduate and undergraduates
who are not enrolled for classes with regular meeting times and/or are
completing a few remaining credits. These students usually already have
extensive experience in their field. Students in these internships should
NOT expect to fulfill the requirements of other organized classes that
require regular weekly attendance because the demands of the internship
are so high. Interns will be required to be very available to the production
and on-set or in the office at all times during shooting.
These students can NOT expect to take a regular course load while
interning. SOME of these positions are accompanied by tuition fellowships
or awards.
Apprenticeships are primarily for graduate students, very advanced undergrads,
and recent graduated students. These students will already have extensive
experience in their field, have already interned on a production or have
equivalent experience, and may have the opportunity to serve as a crew
head on one of the films. Students in these internships will NOT be
able to fulfill the requirements of other organized classes because the
demands of the internship are so high. They will be required to be totally
available to the production and on-set or in the office at all times
during shooting. Apprentices will also receive compensation for their
work in the form of tuition fellowships, reimbursements, or swards. Art
Department, Production Design, and Editorial apprentices will have more
extensive obligations. Some apprentices will be granted TAships and
may serve as managers of other student interns.
These students can have no other commitments while interning. These
positions are accompanied by tuition fellowships or awards.

7.
Are Apprenticeships and Full-Time internships available
in all departments?
No. Not all departments offer apprenticeship
possibilities, and the number and nature of positions available
will differ from production to production. Open positions
will be decided by the needs of the production and the
probability of a valuable academic experience for the student
intern. Changes to internship opportunities (opening and
closing) happen on a regular basis.
8.
What positions might I apply for?
A description of all available positions, and
qualifications expected of those interns, can be found
at:
Intern Job Descriptions
These descriptions are updated each semester but are subject to change
at any time. The production reserves the right not to hire an intern
should none qualify for a given position.
9.
How do I obtain a degree audit or unofficial transcript
to submit with my application?
Undergraduates should click on the link
below:
http://www.utexas.edu/student/registrar/ida/
Please attach the printable version (it should be
6-8 pages) to your application email.
Graduate students cannot create an IDA and should
submit a self-prepared CV or course list.
10.
What should I do if I have already graduated but would
like to apply for an internship?
Alumni who are interested in working on Burnt
Orange Productions films have three options
1) Enroll for a for-credit, post-graduation
internship.
Immediately following separation from the University, students can enroll
for internship credit and take a UTFI internship as described above.
Students who have little or no film experience but have the resources
to intern following graduation and would like to get their feet wet in
filmmaking generally exercise this option.
2) Alumni may apply for open apprentice
positions in some departments.
Some apprenticeships are open to recent graduates (within 2 years of
separation from UT) if no enrolled student has been found to fill the
position. These positions are not available in all departments
and are not generally advertised beyond the initial call for enrolled
apprentices.
Alumni may submit resumes and letters of interest to Bryan Sebok via email. Please specify that you are interested
in post-graduation apprentice positions.
3) Alumni may apply for paid jobs on the
film through the production office.
Burnt Orange Productions posts crew calls to the general public via the Texas
Film Commission Production Hotline. UTFI is unable to offer
a placement service for recent graduates, but those who apply are encouraged
to note their UT affiliation and/or their previous work with Burnt Orange
Productions and UTFI.
11.
Who do I contact if I have a question about my internship?
If you have questions about internships and
UTFI in general, the application process, or your internship
in particular, email them to Bryan Sebok .
If you have a question concerning the requirements of your department’s
internship course, please see your academic advisor and/or career counselor.
12.
What if I have already completed a UTFI/BOP internship?
Follow your department’s rules about taking
the internship class more than once.
Students who have already completed an internship are encouraged to apply
for positions in other departments or to seek out roles of more responsibility
within their previous departments.
